Winter Rye (Secale cereale):
Winter Rye is the hardiest of all cereals. It makes a great cover crop in cool areas or high altitude locations. Winter rye competes with weeds and cycles nutrients providing significant reduction in nitrate leaching. It can reduce erosion & runoff, add large amounts of organic matter, reduce disease pressure, and improve soil structure. Winter Rye is widely adapted and does well on a variety of soil types. It should planted in the fall in the colder parts of the United States. Warmer areas should plant AGS104 rye or Merced Rye.
